Amnesty International warns India over Occupied Kashmir unrest

NEW DELHI: Amnesty International warns India over Occupied Kashmir unrestafter its decision to revoke the status of Occupied Kashmir.

Amnesty International has cautioned India that its decision to change thestatus of the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir would pave way for anincrease in violence.

The constitutional change announ­ced by the government of Prime MinisterNarendra Modi on Monday withdraws special rights conferred on residents ofIndia-held Kashmir, including a provision that prevents outsiders frombuying property there. It also means that college places and stategovernment jobs may no longer be reserved for permanent residents.

In a statement, Amnesty International India said the move could “causeunrest and widen scale [of] protests” in the disputed region.
