ISLAMABAD – Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South andCentral Asian Affairs Alice Wells is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad onMonday for talks that will basically focus on bilateral issues, officialssaid on Sunday.
An official said the US is agreeing to restart talks and cooperation inmany areas, including trade and higher education as starters.
He said Afghanistan will not be the focus of Wells talks with Pakistaniofficials as currently she has got nothing to do with Afghanistan. She hadopened the talks with the Taliban in July last year but Zalmay Khalilzadhas been dealing with the Afghan issue since he was appointed U.S. SpecialRepresentative for Afghanistan Reconciliation in September.
The US defence department Pentagon notified the Congress last week of itsdecision to approve military sales worth 125 million dollars logistic andtechnical support for Pakistan’s F-16 fleet days after Prime Minister ImranKhan met President Donald Trump at the White House.
Both sides will also have follow up talks in the wake of understandingbetween Prime Minister Khan and President Trump.
Alice Wells arrives at a time when relations between Pakistan and India aretense and there is escalations along the Line of Control.
