United States to establish new Military Bases in overseas country: Report

ATHENS – -World- United States to establish new Military Bases in overseascountry Greece, Media Reports have revealed.

The agreement link ondefense cooperation between Athenslink and Washingtonlink, which providesfor the establishment of US military bases in Greecelink, will be open-endedand no longer require an annual renewal, the Kathimerini newspaper reportedon Thursday.

According to the newspaper, the decision was made after two months ofnegotiations between working groups dedicated to amending the annex to the1990 Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreementlink (MDCA). Theupdated agreementlink willbe officially signed by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and USSecretary of State Mike Pompeolink during thelatter’s visit link toAthens link in about twoweeks, Sputnik has reported.

Athens is eager to boost the US presence in Greecelink amid the period ofuncertainty in the region and wants to increase its strategic importance,the newspaper says.

Washington and Athenslink havesignificantly strengthened their military ties in recent years. Currently,the Greek parliamentlink approvesone-year extensions of the agreementlink every year. Greecelink hosts only oneoperating US base, the Souda Bay Naval Base, on the island of Crete.
