FAISALABAD: (APP) Cardiac surgeons of Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology (FIC) have successfully conducted open heart surgery of a female patient by using Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) first time in the history of Pakistan.
Talking to media here Monday, Executive Director/Chief Cardiac Surgeon FIC Prof Anjum Jalal said that 23-year-old female patient was referred from Mandi Bahauddin to FIC during August this as she was facing critical cardiac problems. Size of her heart was large and its valves were also affected badly with leakage.

However, FIC surgeons Dr Irfan Rasheed and Dr Sohail Chaudhry conducted open heart surgery successfully by using ECMO technology. Dr Asif Alamgir and Dr Sajida assisted the surgeons whereas Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Rae Zulfiqar, Dr Nusrat Rizvi, Dr Azmat Bilal, Dr Zulfiqar Haidar and other cardiac specialists were also present on the occasion.
The surgeons spent 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete heart surgery whereas the patient came into sense after three hours and her ventilator was removed after six hours and she became able to talk on the operation day, Prof Anjum Jalal added.
