The government-planned visit of 24 EU lawmakers after the Indian governmentrepealed Article 370 and withdrew Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) special status,was planned by India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, with backingfrom the prime minister’s office, Indian media reported on Wednesday.
The recent revelation has given rise to a controversy in India and othercountries, as it emerged that Doval and a low-profile NGO have been actingon behalf of the Indian government.
The EU lawmakers, who visited Srinagar to observe the situation, appear tohave only met with government officials during their closely monitored trip.

However, both the European Union and India’s ministry of external affairshave said they had nothing to do with the trip. This is the first timesince August 5 the Modi government has allowed a delegation of foreignersinto Indian Occupied Kashmir.
The visit was orchestrated to look like it was organised by a privateBritish citizen called Madi Sharma, founder of the Women’s Economic andSocial Think Tank (WESTT), and supposedly paid for by another Indian thinktank called the International Institute of Non-Aligned Studies, accordingto an invitation sent to British politician Chris Davies.
Chris Davies, a Liberal Democrat lawmaker from the UK, spoke publiclyrevealing that he was invited to be part of the delegation by WESTT, andthen disinvited when he asked to move around freely in Kashmir.
“I am not prepared to take part in a PR stunt for the Modi government andpretend that all is well. It is very clear that democratic principles arebeing subverted in Kashmir, and the world needs to start taking notice,” hesaid.
He added, “I think the actions of the Government of India in Kashmir arebetraying the best principles of a great democracy, and I believe the lessnotice that the rest of the world pays to the situation the more pleasedthey will be.”
