The spokesperson of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has stated that thedecision has been made by the party to file a petition for contempt ofcourt against the Election Commission. According to the spokesperson, theElection Commission deviated from the constitution in relation to theelections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.
The spokesperson mentioned that PTI has taken a legal step towards theanalysis of assemblies in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which requires theElection Commission to hold elections within 90 days before the pre-termanalysis of assemblies.
The spokesperson further added that the Supreme Court, while explainingthe constitutional directive for elections within 90 days, bound theElection Commission on May 14th to hold elections in Punjab. However, theElection Commission instead decided to defer elections for an indefiniteperiod.
It should be noted that on January 12th of the current year, Punjab’sChief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had submitted a summary for theanalysis of the provincial assembly to Punjab’s governor. Similarly, ChiefMinister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mahmood Khan, had sent the assembly’sanalysis summary to the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 17th,which was approved by the governor the next day.
