ISLAMABAD: Pakistani security forces on Saturday successfully thwarted aterrorist infiltration attempt from Afghanistan in Kurram district, forcingthe armed militants to retreat under heavy fire.
Local sources said suspicious movements were detected near the porousborder, prompting an immediate alert. Troops swiftly positioned themselvesand engaged the infiltrators as they attempted to cross into Pakistaniterritory.
The exchange of fire was intense but brief. Official sources confirmed theterrorists, unable to withstand the counter-attack, fled in panic back intoAfghan territory, suffering unknown casualties.
The incident comes days after Director General Inter-Services PublicRelations (DG ISPR) accused Afghan forces of providing fire cover tomilitants, locally termed Khawarij, and smugglers attempting illegal bordercrossings.
Military officials said Afghan troops often open indiscriminate fire onPakistani posts to create diversion, enabling terrorists and contrabandrunners to slip through during the chaos.
Intelligence agencies had been monitoring unusual activity along the Kurramsector for several days, indicating a possible coordinated infiltration bidahead of winter.
