ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and former chief justice SaqibNisar on May 2 are scheduled to perform the ground-breaking of much-awaitedMohmand Dam at the project site, at Swat River, about five-kilometersupstream of Munda Headworks, Mohmand district.
According to a notification of the Ministry of Water and Power, allarrangements have been finalised.
The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has awarded contract ofthe project to a consortium led by Descon Engineering.
The project will be completed at the cost of about Rs183 billion.
Mohmand Dam would have a gross storage capacity to store 1.2 million acrefeet (MAF) water with power generation potential of 800-MW and it willirrigate around 16,000 acres of land and ensure supply of water to 160,000acres of land.
Residents of Peshawar will get 300 million gallons of potable water.
The dam will generate profit of Rs52 billion annually. The project aims athelping mitigate risk of floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Mardan.
