*ISLAMABAD – A Pakistani-Scottish woman, Imtiaz Dharker, is expected tobecome the next poet laureate – a member of the royal household whocomposes poems for state occasions.*
Dharker will be the first Asian poet laureate in the 350-year-oldposition’s history and the second woman, succeeding Carol Ann Duffy, to getthe honourary position, *Daily Mail* reported.
“Reading her, one feels that she were there to be a world laureate, ImtiazDharker would be the only candidate,” Duffy said.
The final decision of the appointment will be taken by The Queen.
The 65-year-old has written about religion, identity, culture and feminism,and is a former poet-in residence at the Cambridge University Library.
She was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2014.
