ISLAMABAD – Islamabad Police has reportedly booked the chief securityofficer of the US embassy for confronting law enforcers after the caraccident in capital yesterday night.
The diplomat was handed over to Foreign Office (FO) officials last nightafter recording his statement at the police station. The incident tookplace on Islamabad’s Constitution Avenue on Sunday night.
Police said Nazakat Aslam Awan and Mohammad Waseem were riding a motorcyclewhen they were hit by a vehicle on Constitution Avenue near the PakSecretariat complex at around 9:40pm.
The car was being driven by US Embassy Second Secretary Chad RexAusburn. Police, who were on duty nearby, immediately responded to theemergency and shifted both the motorcyclists to PIMS.
Ausburn produced his diplomatic card issued by the foreign office alongwith a valid driving licence to police. Subsequently, authorities shiftedboth the car and the diplomat to the Secretariat Police Station for legalformalities.
SSP-Operations Najeebur Rehman Bugvi had said the diplomat would not bereleased until the Foreign Office verifies his diplomatic status andimmunity. “Police have prepared an SOP to deal with such incidents, and asper the SOP diplomatic document would not be accepted by the police [forrelease] without its verification by the Foreign Office,” he said.
