Pakistan – Russia inch closer further on international arena

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Russia have expressed concern regarding erosion ofcarefully negotiated international arrangements in several areas, anofficial statement said.

Pakistani foreign ministry in the statement released after meeting ofPakistan-Russia Consultative Group on Strategic Stability in Islamabad saidthe two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on prevailing regional andglobal security environments and their impact on the international armscontrol, disarmament and non-proliferation agenda.

“Pakistan Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and Mr. Sergey Ryabkov, DeputyForeign Minister of the Russian Federation, led their respectivedelegations to the 13th Meeting of the Pakistan-Russia Consultative Groupon Strategic Stability,” it said.

It further said the two sides agreed on the need for preservingmultilateralism in the field of international security and disarmament andshared the concern regarding the possible erosion of painstakinglynegotiated international arrangements in several areas.

“The discussions encompassed issues such as non-militarization of outerspace, upholding bilateral and multilateral treaties, developments in thefield of information and telecommunications in the context of internationalsecurity as well as matters related to the IAEA, OPCW and the Conference onDisarmament in Geneva,” said the statement.

It added the two sides underscored with satisfaction the closecoordination, cooperation and consultations between Russia and Pakistan atvarious international forums.

Pakistan-Russia Consultative Group on Strategic Stability is a platform forstructured dialogue between the two sides and has been meeting since 2003.
