Military Courts Extension in Pakistan: PTI government takes important decision

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf federal government has takenimportant decision over the issue of extension in the military courts inPakistan.

PTI government on Saturday decided to extend the tenure of military courtsfor two years which was previously set to end on January 6, 2019.

Reportedly, the PTI has planned to pass a constitutional amendment; howeverit is yet to be revealed how the amendment would be achieved withouttwo-third majority in the parliament, given the uncertain politicalscenario in the country amid recent rifts between majority politicalparties.

However, the Ministry of Law has already drafted the amendment which wouldbe put forth before the parliament next week, and subsequently an attemptwould be made to achieve consensus between the parties.

The military courts were established through a constitutional amendment totry civilians charged with terrorism in January 2015 following the ArmyPublic School attack in December 2014.
