PTI terms Maryam Nawaz acquittal as another dark day in history of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday slammed an IslamabadHigh Court (IHC) verdict to acquit PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz inAvenfield reference.

Earlier in the day, an IHC bench acquitted Maryam, the daughter of formerprime minister Nawaz Sharif, and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar afterthe National Accountability Bureau (NAB) failed to submit valid evidenceagainst them.

In 2018, an accountability court awarded ten years sentence to Nawaz Sharifwhile Maryam was handed seven years in prison for abetment in the caserelated to purchase of upscale properties in London.

She had later challenged the verdict in the high court and denied allallegations leveled against her by the anti-graft watchdog.

Responding to the IHC verdict, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that publichas no more confidence in state institutions, adding that their decisionshave no value near people of the country.

There is no doubt about Maryam’s role in crime related to Avenfiledproperties, he said, adding: “Today is another dark day in Pakistan’shistory”.

In a tweet, PTI Secretary-General leader Asad Umar claimed that dismissingcases against leaders of the “imported government” is the real reasonbehind the ouster of former prime minister Imran Khan.

He said that inflation is touching historic levels in the country and casesare being dropped against leaders of the ruling coalition.

Former energy minister Hammad Azhar said that the PML-N also seemed a “bitembarrassed” after today’s ruling by the high court.
