Umar Saif, the interim Minister of Information Technology, made an announcement on Tuesday regarding the National Artificial Intelligence Policy. His team has diligently crafted the draft of this policy and is currently engaging in consultations with relevant stakeholders. The ultimate aim is to finalize this policy by December. Artificial intelligence, often abbreviated as AI, is the crux of this endeavor.
AI pertains to the development of computer systems with the capability to execute tasks that typically demand human intelligence, encompassing tasks like data learning, pattern recognition, decision-making, and problem-solving. AI strives to create machines that emulate human-like thinking and decision-making processes.
In today's increasingly tech-savvy world, the accessibility of AI technology has paved the way for governments and private sectors worldwide to harness its potential in their day-to-day operations. Pakistan's planning ministry recognized the potential in April, highlighting how the incorporation of AI across various government sectors could enhance decision-making processes, enable personalized medical treatments, and offer improved learning experiences and solutions that were once beyond reach.
The Information Minister commented on the far-reaching implications of this policy and emphasized its open consultation. They've solicited public comments both from within and outside the country to ensure a comprehensive perspective. Furthermore, the Minister stressed the importance of training individuals in AI skills in alignment with this policy, recognizing the inherent value in such expertise.
With a targeted goal of finalizing and notifying the AI policy by December, Pakistan's official artificial intelligence strategy is set to evolve through collaboration with stakeholders before it reaches the federal cabinet for approval.
This comprehensive policy is founded on four core pillars: enabling AI through awareness and readiness, facilitating the AI market, establishing a progressive and trustworthy environment, and fostering its continuous transformation and evolution.
