Islamabad, Dec 27, IRNA – Pakistan’s leading English news daily says therecent visit of Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to Iran,China and Russia is a move to reassure regional partners of not acceptingthe American solution for Afghan peace.
Daily ‘The Nation’ in its editorial comments said the meetings of Pakistaniofficials with regional powers are not only helpful in seeking out apossible peace deal between Afghan government and Taliban, but theseexchanges are also proving extremely helpful in enhancing Pakistan’s tieswith these countries, especially Russia and Iran.
It added Pakistan, Iran, China and Russia are the international actors thatare most interested in a stable Afghanistan than any other nation today.“All the four countries understand the fact that a stable Afghanistan is aprerequisite for regional peace,” it viewed.
The newspaper went on to say that the purpose of the three-day trip was totake all regional stakeholders on board on the Afghan peace process.
“The recent trip of Shah also suggests a paradigm shift in Pakistan’sforeign policy. Pakistan can be seen as the most active regional playerthat wants a peace deal in Afghanistan. For this purpose, Islamabad iswilling to assist even the United States that last year accused it of notacting against safe havens of terrorists,” it said.
The editorial added the trip of Pakistan’s foreign minister to Iran, Chinaand Russia can also be seen as a move of reassurance to regional partnersof not accepting the American solution for Afghan peace.
“Pakistan understands it too well that other than a regional solution thereis no way out to end the vicious cycle of violence in Kabul that isclaiming the lives of people on a routine basis,” it noted.
