ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has released top Afghan Taliban Commander on thespecial request of the United States, sources have revealed.
Pakistan embassy in Kabul on Sunday confirmed the release of Mullah AbdulGhani Baradar, the co-founder of the Taliban movement and Mullah AbdulSamad Sani, also called Samad Sani, a Taliban commander, reported Tolo News.link
The Pakistan embassy in Kabul that the step was taken following Pakistan’scommitment to facilitate the Afghan peace process.
Sources and the Taliban last week confirmed the release of Baradar who theysaid was now back with his family in Karachi after spending eight years inprison.
However, no details have been given on exactly when Baradar and Sani werereleased.
One former Taliban member said it was a positive step in terms offacilitating continued talks between Taliban, US and Pakistan while apolitical affairs analyst Mohamad Mutmaen said: “Pakistan released MullahBaradar due to a goodwill gesture between US and Taliban. I think thisshows goodwill by the US, Taliban and other countries for peace.”
