Article:Islamabad — Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, hasaccused India of weaponizing water by releasing massive flows intoPakistan, causing widespread destruction.
Speaking to media on Wednesday, Iqbal said that India released floodwatersin a manner that inflicted heavy losses on Pakistan. He stressed that ifIndia had fully cooperated under the framework of the Indus Waters Treaty,much of the devastation could have been prevented.
“The recent flooding has shown how vulnerable Pakistan is to upstream watermanipulation. India released water like a weapon rather than coordinatingresponsibly under international agreements,” the minister said.
Iqbal urged New Delhi to uphold its commitments under the Indus WatersTreaty, a landmark water-sharing agreement signed in 1960 with the WorldBank’s mediation. He emphasized that regional cooperation was essential tominimize human suffering and economic losses caused by natural disastersexacerbated by climate change.
The minister also highlighted the need for Pakistan to strengthen itsdisaster preparedness and water management systems to cope with futurechallenges.
