Pakistan responds after US President ignored PM Khan for climate summit

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Saturday stressed on a need for developing inclusive,cooperative and forward-looking policies to counter climate change due toits sensitivity.

The response comes after US President Joe Biden ignored Prime MinisterImran Khan while inviting 40 world leaders, including Indian PM NarendraModi, to the Leaders Summit on Climate he will host on April 22 and 23later this year.

Saying Pakistan remains fully committed to play its due role in this fight,the Foreign Office said that Pakistan’s commitment to addressing ClimateChange and Prime Minister Imran Khan’s leadership on this account is wellaccepted and appreciated around the world.

The Government’s landmark initiatives like the Billion Tree Tsunami havewon international acclaim, including from the World Economic Forum, it added

“Pakistan is also meaningfully contributing to shape the global ClimateChange discourse, inter alia, as the Vice President of the UN FrameworkConvention on Climate Change and member of the Intergovernmental Panel onClimate Change. Pakistan also Co-chaired the multibillion-dollar GreenClimate Fund, established to support climate actions in developingcountries, last year,” the statement read.

The Leaders’ Summit on Climate Change hosted by President Biden reconvenesthe U.S.-led Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, which bringstogether leaders from countries responsible for approximately 80 percent ofglobal emissions and GDP.

The Summit also includes representation from countries holding Chairs ofgeographic regions and groups including Least Developed Countries, SmallIsland Developing States, and Climate Vulnerable Forum.

Pakistan, despite being among the top ten countries affected by ClimateChange, is one of the lowest emitters – with less than one percent of theglobal emissions.
