Lt General Asim Munir takes charge as DG ISI: Career profile of new spy master

ISLAMABAD - Lieutenant General Asim Munir replaces Lieutenant General Naveed Mukhtar as the Director General of ISI.
He on Friday assumed the charge as the new Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) director general by replacing outgoing Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar, who retired on Thursday after reaching the age of superannuation.
Asim Munir was appointed new ISI DG early this month after he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general.
Gen Asim’s tenure would last for three years, however extension could be given to him by the prime minister to whom the DG ISI reports directly.
The new spymaster has rich experience in the field of intelligence. He has served as head of the Military Intelligence as well as commander of the ISI in Peshawar in year 2000.
He also served as military attaché at Pakistan Embassy in Washington and Pakistan Embassy in Saudi Arabia during his military career spanning over three decades and is considered as one of the most professional and finest military officers.
Gen Asim is a native of Jhang district in Punjab but later settled in Rawalpindi. He is also a Hafiz-e-Quran.
