ISLAMABAD: Turkey has signed defence contracts worth $6.5 billion tosignificantly enhance its indigenous Steel Dome air defence system, officials announced on Wednesday. The agreements cover long-range radars, advanced interceptors and command-control infrastructure aimed at creatingan impregnable shield against ballistic and cruise missiles.
The Steel Dome project, developed by Turkish firms Aselsan, Roketsan andHavelsan, will integrate the SIPER long-range missile capable of engagingtargets beyond 150 kilometres with the HISAR series and the Korkut close-inweapon system. The latest funding will accelerate serial production andoperational deployment by 2027.
Defence analysts note that the upgraded system is specifically designed tocounter high-speed threats similar to India’s BrahMos supersonic cruisemissile and Russia’s S-400 complexes deployed in the region. Turkey’sdecision follows successful tests of SIPER Block-II that demonstratedsimultaneous engagement of multiple incoming threats.
Military experts in Pakistan have urged immediate government attentiontowards acquiring the complete Steel Dome architecture, warning that anyfuture escalation hinted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi couldexpose existing air defences to saturation attacks. The system’s layeredapproach is seen as critical for protecting strategic assets.
The contracts were signed during a ceremony attended by President RecepTayyip Erdoğan and senior military leadership. Turkish authoritiesdescribed the development as a milestone in achieving full sovereignty overnational air defence capabilities.
