ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq Khan,on Wednesday held detailed talks with Mohammad Reza Bahrami,Director-General for South Asia at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, underscoringthe need for coordinated regional efforts against militant groups operatingfrom Afghanistan.
The discussions centred on escalating security challenges along thePakistan-Afghanistan border and the growing threat posed by cross-borderterrorism. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to close cooperation incombating extremist networks.
In a post on X, Sadiq Khan described the meeting as a useful opportunity toexchange views on recent regional developments and stressed that Pakistanand Iran would continue working with neighbours to address sharedchallenges.Earlier the same day, Sadiq Khan met Tajikistan’s Ambassador YusufSharifzoda in Islamabad. The two sides explored ways to enhanceintelligence-sharing and joint counterterrorism measures concerningAfghanistan.
Both meetings highlighted the importance of regional mechanisms to preventthe resurgence of extremist elements and to ensure lasting peace in Southand Central Asia.
Security analysts view the back-to-back engagements as part of Pakistan’sproactive outreach to forge a united front with Iran, Tajikistan and otherneighbours against terrorism emanating from Afghan soil.
The talks signal Islamabad’s determination to address bordervulnerabilities through diplomacy and collective security arrangementsrather than unilateral measures alone.
