Pakistan Issues Final Deadline for Afghan Refugees

ISLAMABAD – The Government of Pakistan has announced August 31, 2025 asthe final deadline for Afghan refugees to leave the country voluntarily,warning that strict measures will be taken against those who overstay.

According to official sources, the repatriation campaign has now enteredits last phase, with authorities urging undocumented Afghan nationals toreturn to their homeland through legal crossing points. The government hasrepeatedly stated that it will not tolerate illegal stay after the givendate.

Officials said that special arrangements have been made at bordercrossings, particularly at Torkham and Chaman, to facilitate a smoothreturn process. Transport facilities and registration desks have also beenset up to assist families in departing before the deadline.

Interior Ministry spokesperson emphasized that Pakistan had hosted millionsof Afghan refugees for decades on humanitarian grounds, but the country’seconomic and security challenges no longer allow indefinite stay.

The repatriation plan was first announced in 2023, and several extensionswere granted to ensure voluntary return. However, authorities clarifiedthat this will be the final deadline, after which strict action,including deportations, will be enforced.

Human rights organizations have expressed concern over the short notice formany families, calling on Pakistan to adopt a phased and humanitarianapproach.
