ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Peacekeepers have rescued more than 2000 peoplestranded due to heavy floods in Uvira region of South Kivu in DemocraticRepublic of Congo.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), torrential floodserupted in Uvira and surroundings in Congo starting last week, whichcontinued for days. Rains and flooding damaged thousands of houses andaffected nearly 75000 people.
The statement further said Pakistani Blue Helmets, part of UN Mission inCongo, immediately rushed to the affected areas for rescue and relief oflocal Congolese Populace.
It said rescue parties were immediately dispatched with paramedics andrescue equipment to different locations. Troops also built a stoneembankment to check the flood water, which was strong enough to shiftpeople and vehicles from affected area. The stranded people were servedwith food and provided necessary medical care.
Pakistani Peacekeepers’ rescue efforts have been widely acknowledged bylocals as well UN authorities.
Being one of the largest troops contributing country, Pakistan has morethan 4000 blue helmets serving under UN for maintaining peace and stability.
