ISLAMABAD – The federal government on Friday removed the chairperson of theHigher Education Commission, Tariq Banuri, from his post with an immediateeffect.
A notification issued by the cabinet secretariat reads ‘In terms ofsub-section (5), read with sub-section (5A), of Section 6 of HigherEducation Commission Ordinance, 2002, as amended vide Higher EducationCommission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, Dr. Tariq Danuri has ceased to bethe Chairperson, Higher Education Commission forthwith and is accordinglyremoved from the post, with immediate effect.’
Reports in media revealed a hefty salary of Rs 8 lacs per month along withinappropriate appointment as the cause of dismissal. The NationalAccountability Bureau (NAB) also took notice of the appointment and soughtclarification from the concerned authorities.
It is also reported that Banuri usually avoided meeting with thevice-chancellors and listening to the grievances of public sectoruniversities.
No one has been given the responsibility of the HEC chairperson after thedismissal of Banuri.
Dr. Banuri holds a doctorate in Economics from Harvard University and anM.A in Development Economics from Williams College. He started his careeras a civil servant in Pakistan but then left to pursue a Ph.D. at Harvardand majorly served in the social and development sector abroad.
He was appointed HEC chairperson in 2018 by former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
