US State Department clarifies Mike Pompeo’s remarks about Pakistani Nukes

WASHINGTON: US Department of State Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino hassaid that United States wants a prosperous Pakistan and continues itsefforts for the regional stability and security.

He said this while addressing at a press briefing here in Washington.

While replying to a question, Robert Pallandino said that Pakistan’s rolein Afghanistan peace process is very important and adding that it couldplay an important role in bringing about a negotiated settlement inAfghanistan and expressed gratitude to Islamabad for whatever it had doneto this end.

When asked to elaborate Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s statement aboutPakistan’s nuclear program, the spokesman said nuclear proliferation wasone of the very first national security concerns articulated in the USNational Security Strategy.

“It’s at the very top of the list. So that absolutely remains somethingthat this administration thinks about often, because the level of – thelevel, the impact, of what could happen is simply so great. So that remainsat the very top of our national security considerations.”

It is pertinent to mention here that the US envoy seeking a peace deal withthe Taliban to end 17 years of war is visiting the region for a new roundof talks, according to the State Department.

Zalmay Khalilzad will head to Afghanistan as well as neighboring Pakistanduring the trip that began Monday and is scheduled to run through April 10.

The State Department did not confirm he would hold fresh talks with theTaliban but said he would stop in Qatar, the usual location fornegotiations with the militants.
