US Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders slams President Donald Trump’s silence over mob violence against Indian Muslims

ISLAMABAD – United States presidential candidate and Democratic member ofthe US Senate, Bernie Sanders slams President Donald Trump’s silence overmob violence against Indian Muslims

Sanders on Wednesday said that the selective statement of US PresidentDonald Trump on anti-Muslim mob violence in India was a failure ofleadership on human rights.

In a message shared on social networking platform Twitter, Sanders saidthat more than 200 million Muslims call India home and Trump terming thespread of anti-Muslim mob violence an internal matter for the authoritieswas a failure of leadership on his part.

“Over 200 million Muslims call India home. Widespread anti-Muslim mobviolence has killed at least 27 and injured many more.

Trump responds by saying, ‘That’s up to India.’ This is a failure ofleadership on human rights,” he tweeted.

Sporadic violence hit parts of Delhi overnight as gangs roamed streetslittered with the debris of days of sectarian riots that have killed 32people, police said Thursday. Thousands of riot police and paramilitariespatrolled the affected northeast fringes of the Indian capital.

The unrest is the latest bout of violence over a new citizenship lawchampioned by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which triggered monthsof demonstrations that turned deadly in December.

The law is discriminatory toward the Muslim minority of the country.
