COAS - Shahbaz Sharif to meet to defuse current situation

ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbz Sharif called on Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and discussed the prevailing situation after the crackdown on Islamabad protesters.

The meeting was followed by another important session attended by Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal and senior officials of police, interior ministry and city administration of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The COAS in a telephonic call on Saturday had 'suggested the prime minister to handle Islamabad Dharna peacefully, avoiding violence from both sides as it is not in national interest and cohesion'.

Sources said that PM Abbasi and CM Shahbaz may also meet Army Chief Qamar Bajwa who has reached Islamabad after cutting short his UAE visit.

At least seven people were killed and over 200 people, including police officers, were injured as forces moved on high court's order to disperse a sit-in that had virtually paralysed the country´s capital for weeks.

Later, the government called out the army after clashes broke out in the twin cities and other major cities of the country when police and paramilitary forces cracked down on protesters from Tehreek Labaik Pakistan (TLP) who were blocking the Faizabad Interchange for the last 20 days.
