ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Navy on Tuesday conducted a successful live-firetest of an advanced surface-to-surface missile from a F-22P Zulfiqar-classguided missile frigate during an exercise in the North Arabian Sea,official sources confirmed.
The missile was launched from the indigenously upgraded PNS Zulfiqar, striking its designated target with pinpoint accuracy and reaffirming theoperational readiness of the fleet’s primary surface combatants.
Besides the latest SMASH missile system, the Zulfiqar-class frigates areequipped to carry eight FM-90N surface-to-air missiles, providing robustair defence against incoming aerial threats at short to medium ranges.
Each vessel also accommodates eight surface-to-surface missiles, sixanti-submarine torpedoes, and twelve anti-submarine rockets, enablingsimultaneous engagement across surface, air, and underwater domains.
The frigates are further strengthened by a 76.2 mm main naval gun for shorebombardment and surface engagements, complemented by two close-in weaponsystems for terminal point defence against missiles and aircraft.
Military analysts described the test as a clear message of Pakistan’sgrowing maritime deterrence and self-reliance in modern naval warfaretechnology amid regional security challenges.
The four Zulfiqar-class frigates, originally built with Chinese cooperationand later upgraded locally, now form the backbone of Pakistan Navy’ssurface fleet alongside newer platforms.
