ISLAMABAD: A big diplomatic success for Pakistan Foreign Policy at the topInternational Forum of United Nations.
Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in Geneva,Ambassador Khalil Hashmi has been elected President of the 11th session ofthe Commission on Trade and Development.
The commission is one of the key constituents on the UN Conference on Tradeand Development (UNCTAD) based in Geneva, the Foreign Office said in astatement.
The commission is an important platform to deliberate on key trade anddevelopment issues.
Pakistan’s presidency will provide an opportunity to share its experiencesand to benefit from international best practices that help advance tradeand development goals, the statement read.
“The commission will consider reports on legal and policy aspects of trade,services, commodities, consumer protection and competition within theoverall context of sustainable development,” it said, adding it will alsoconsider progress in research and analysis, consensus building andtechnical cooperation and discuss ways to strengthen multilateralcooperation in the areas of trade and development.
“Election to lead the UNCTAD reflects recognition of Pakistan’s activeengagement and its key role in the multilateral fora,” the Foreign Officesaid.
