ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s civil aviation sector marked a significant milestoneon Monday with the official inauguration of South Air Limited, a newprivate airline focused on enhancing domestic air travel and linking remoteareas of the country.
The launch ceremony, held in Islamabad, was attended by senior governmentofficials, aviation authorities and industry stakeholders. Senate ChairmanSyed Yusuf Raza Gilani graced the occasion as chief guest and formallyunveiled the airline’s branding.
Addressing the gathering, Gilani described the establishment of South Airas a “historic step” towards inclusive economic growth. He emphasised thatthe carrier would play a pivotal role in connecting smaller citiescurrently deprived of reliable air services.
The Senate Chairman highlighted that improved aviation infrastructure inSouth Punjab, interior Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa wouldfacilitate trade, tourism, education and healthcare access whilestrengthening national unity through better people-to-people contact.
South Air plans to commence commercial operations with an inaugural flightfrom Karachi to Multan in the coming weeks. The airline intends togradually expand its route network to include additional destinations inunderserved regions.
Civil Aviation Authority officials welcomed the entry of the new operator,stating that increased competition would lead to improved services and moreaffordable fares for passengers travelling within Pakistan.
Industry analysts believe the addition of South Air will contribute to theoverall growth of the domestic aviation market, which has shown steadyrecovery following challenges posed by the pandemic and recent economicpressures.
