Pakistani police banned from using WhatsApp

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Moazzam JahAnsari, has directed the provincial police department to leave all WhatsAppgroups or face disciplinary action.

Police officials have also been warned against the “unacceptable” use ofWhatsApp to share sensitive operational information and discriminatorycomments.

The development comes a day after two police personnel were killed in acombing operation in Hayatabad. It is suspected that information related tothe coveted operation was leaked beforehand through a WhatsApp group andreached the criminals.

The security forces had launched a raid based on a tip to arrest thefugitives. However, two officers, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Riyaz Khanand Constable Jaffer were killed in the crossfire that ensued.

IGP Moazzam Ansari spoke to the media after the operation and said thatseven fugitives had been arrested, and weapons had been recovered fromtheir possession.
