NEW DELHI – Former President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday said that citizensare disillusioned with governments and efforts should be made to win backthe people’s trust to save India’s democracy.
“In the recent past institutions have come under severe strain and theircredibility is being questioned. There is widespread cynicism anddisillusionment with the government and the functioning of theinstitutions,” said Mukherjee at the inauguration of a national conferenceon “Towards Peace, Harmony and Happiness: Transition to transformation”organised by Pranab Mukherjee Foundation and the Centre for Research inRural Development (CRRID).
“The country is passing through a difficult phase. The land which gave theconcept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and civilisational ethos of forgiveness,tolerance and acceptance is now in news for rising intolerance, rage andinfringement of human rights,” he added.
