WASHINGTON – US State Department condemned the killing of noted Pakistaniinvestigative journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya and called for anindependent investigation into his death.
US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price during a presser urged Kenyanauthorities for a probe into the matter. He refrained from going intospecifics, saying “It’s not entirely clear that we know all thecircumstances at this point regarding what led to his death, urging for afull investigation.”
Commending the work of the late Pakistani journalist, he said it’s clearthat Arshad was dedicated to that fundamental right of freedom ofexpression, which took him around the world.
The US official also expressed condolences to the slain journalist’s familyand his loved ones and the Pakistani journalist community.
When asked how Washington was helping journalists facing threat, Ned Pricesaid Washington believes in the protection of journalists and the right tofreedom of expression and mentioned that USAID has a number of programs towork with governments around the world to bolster those rights, to bolsterindependent media.
