BEIJING – China on Tuesday said both India and Pakistan were importantcountries in South Asia and maintaining the steady development ofIndia-Pakistan relations was of important significance to the peace anddevelopment of the region and the world at large.
“We sincerely hope that the two countries can enhance communication anddialogue, properly handle differences, improve their relations and jointlyuphold regional peace and stability,” Chinese foreign ministry’sspokesperson Geng Shuang said during his regular briefing while commentingon cancellation of a meeting between the foreign ministers of India andPakistan, which was scheduled to be held on the sidelines of United NationsGeneral Assembly.
Responding to a question, he said last week Chinese Ambassador to PakistanYao Jing met Pakistan’s Minister for Religious Affairs Noorul Haq Qadri,during which the two sides had good communication on China-Pakistanrelations and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
“The Chinese side commends the efforts made by the Pakistani government topromote religious harmony. Our two sides share the same position onreligious issues,” he added.
Geng Shuang said in the information released by Associated Press ofPakistan on that day, the meeting was reported in an accurate way. However,some foreign media made unfounded and distorted reports on the meeting.China was firmly opposed to that.
He said, “Chinese government governs and develops Xinjiang in accordancewith law.” A host of policies and measures had been introduced to promotestability, development and solidarity and improve people’s livelihood inXinjiang, thus safeguarding social stability and lasting peace there.
He said currently, Xinjiang enjoyed social stability and a sound momentumof economic development with people of different ethnic groups living inharmony. – APP
