Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak passed away at the age of 91

ISLAMABAD – Former president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak has passed away at theage of 91.

Mubarak, who ruled for almost three decades in Egypt, stepped down after apopular revolution in 2011, has died.

According to state media, he underwent a surgery and passed away weeksafter that.

Mubarak was Egypt’s fourth president who assumed charges in 1981 until hisouster after the prominent Arab Spring revolution in 2011.

He has also remained in jail for years following the uprising, but wasfreed in 2017 after being acquitted of most charges.

His harsh stance on security enabled him to maintain the peace treaty withIsrael.

Under his reign, Egypt remained a key United States ally in the region -receiving $1.3bn a year in US military aid by 2011.

Mubarak is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and his sons, Gamal and Alaa.
