In a first, Iran fires submarine launched cruise missile

TEHRAN (FNA)- A Qadir-class submarine of the Iranian Navy for the firsttime during naval wargames fired an anti-ship cruise missile athypothetical enemy targets in the Southern waters of the country on Sunday.

On the third and last day of ‘Velayat 97’ drills, a light submarine firedthe cruise missile which hit the target successfully.

Commander of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi had announcedlast Monday that the country’s Qadir-class submarines had several timesfired anti-ship cruise missiles, adding that the new home-made submarine,Fateh, also enjoys this capability.

“Our Qadir-class submarines have so far fired cruise missiles and Fateh hasthis capability too and we will display it in future drills,” Rear AdmiralKhanzadi told FNA.

He also added that the missile mounted on Fateh submarine is the newgeneration of home-made Nasr missile which was developed within theframework of Jask 2 project and has differences in range with the pastmodels of Nasr cruise missile.[image: Embedded video]link

On the first day of the wargames on Friday, the Iranian naval forces forthe first time had used the home-made Fateh submarine and Sahand destroyer.

Also, during the third day of exercises in the Persian Gulf and the Sea ofOman, the helicopter units of the Navy carried out heliborne operations andlaunched attacks and destroyed hypothetical enemy targets.

The helicopters, including Bell-212, used rocket-launching systems andmachine guns to successfully smash the targets. Other helicopters of theNavy, equipped with demining equipment, destroyed enemy mines in the sea.

Also, one of the Air Force’s Phantom fighters fired a home-made air-basedNasr cruise missile at a target in the sea to provide support for theNavy’s vessels during the wargames.

The Iranian Naval forces fired several home-made cruise missiles andtorpedoes from the country’s vessels and submarines on the second day ofwargames on Saturday.

Iranian naval forces on Friday started a massive three-day drill, codenamed’Velayat 97, in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

The drills are being held in an area of two million square kilometers, fromthe Strait of Hormuz to the Southeastern coasts of Makran, the Sea of Omanand the Northern parts of the Indian Ocean, down to the 10-degrees latitude.
