Pakistan Military rejects notion of friction with Iranian counterpart, reveals key meetings at GHQ and borders

ISLAMABAD -- Spokesperson of the Pakistan Army says that Iran and Pakistan have excellent cooperation at all levels to strengthen the security of joint border.

Director General (DG) of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor said this while responding to a question of IRNA's Correspondent on Zahedan terror attack at a press conference with local and international media at army headquarters in Rawalpindi on Friday.

He said that the border issue between Pakistan and Iran has nothing to do with our border issues with Afghanistan adding Pakistan has full faith in its borders with Iran.

“Yes an incident happened we are neighboring countries, we share border, porous border, unmanned border, but we have a very good coordination with Iran,” he said.

He said: Iran and Pakistan have good coordination at different levels whether it is local or between forces on Pak-Iran border, or between the leadership, military and civilian both.

“This terrorism is a regional threat, a regional challenge and it needs a regional approach, we are in good coordination with Iran and we would ensure that such movement would not happen as third party is friend of none,” viewed the general.

In response to another question of IRNA’s correspondent regarding contacts between Iranian and Pakistani armed forces on Zahedan terrorist attack, Major General Asif Ghafoor said yesterday there was a meeting at army headquarters on the issue and simultaneously a meeting was held between the military forces of two countries at common border.

He told IRNA that future of cooperation between the armies of Iran and Pakistan is very bright and we consider this cooperation to be excellent.

To another question he said Iran is a brotherly Muslim neighboring country with whom we have history of brotherly relations, we share 909 kilometers border with Iran, now Iran is friendly, brotherly Muslim country and our border with Iran is unmanned as we have no threat from them.

Major General Asif Ghafoor said some times the terrorists exploit these conditions but now Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan have very good coordination to stop the misuse of border freely by the terrorists.

He said as our focus had remained mostly on Pak-Afghan border so some terrorists occasionally become active on Iran-Pak border but on this we have very good coordination with Iran and you must have remembered that Pakistan’s Army Chief had also visited Iran.

“Our articulation for coordination and security has improved considerably, we are thinking with Iran to fence the Iran-Pak border also having agreed to each other so that the border cannot be used by third party to exploit it against Iran or Pakistan,” said Pakistan army spokesperson.

Earlier Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had also said Islamabad will extend all out cooperation to Iran over the recent terror attack in its Sistan-Baluchestan.

A suicide attack on a bus carrying the Islamic Republic Guards Corps (IRGC) personnel martyred 27 and wounded 13 in southeastern Iran on February 12. A terrorist group so-called Jaish al-Adl, affiliated to Al-Qaida, claimed responsibility for the incident.
