ISLAMABAD: Global shipping leader A.P. Moller-Maersk has unveiled plans toinvest $2 billion in Pakistan’s maritime and logistics infrastructure overthe next decade, marking one of the largest foreign direct investments inthe country’s history.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting between Maerskexecutives and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where the company outlinedits intention to develop a state-of-the-art deep-sea port and integratedlogistics hub.
Under the proposed plan, Maersk will construct a new shipping terminal atKarachi Port and establish a modern logistics and warehousing centre nearthe port area to enhance trade efficiency and reduce transit times.
The project also includes the development of a dedicated economic zone thatwill offer advanced cold-chain facilities, digital customs clearance, andmultimodal connectivity linking sea, road, and rail transport networks.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh described theinvestment as a vote of confidence in Pakistan’s improving economic outlookand strategic location along global trade corridors.
Maersk officials stated that the initiative will create thousands of directand indirect jobs while significantly boosting Pakistan’s exportcompetitiveness through faster and more reliable supply chains.
The investment comes as part of Maersk’s broader strategy to expand itsfootprint in emerging markets and strengthen operations along theChina-Pakistan Economic Corridor route.
Both sides have agreed to fast-track regulatory approvals and providenecessary incentives to ensure timely execution of the multi-phase project.
