Regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia have resumed key talks in the Iraqicapital Baghdad after negotiations were suspended last month, a seniorIraqi official said Saturday.
“Talks resumed last Thursday in Baghdad,” the official said, speaking oncondition of anonymity, and without giving further details.
Iran link Nour news agency confirmed ameeting attended by “senior officials from the secretariat of Iranlink Supreme National Security Council andthe head of the Saudi intelligence service”.
Shiite-majority Iran link and the Sunnikingdom of Saudi Arabia link supportrival sides in several conflict zones across the region, including inYemen, where the Huthi rebels are backed by Tehran, and Riyadh leads amilitary coalition supporting the government.
In 2016, Iranian protesters attacked Saudi diplomatic missions in Iranlink after the kingdom executed reveredShiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
Riyadh responded by cutting ties with Tehran. -APP/AFP
