President underlines need for access to safe and affordable drinking water

President Dr. Arif Alvi has called for steps to ensure sanitation, cleanliness and availability of clean drinking water to all segments of the society.

Addressing a function in connection with Clean and Green Pakistan in Islamabad on Thursday, he urged the need for creating awareness among people regarding cleanliness.

Arif Alvi said the children through their syllabus should be educated about the benefits of cleanliness and sanitation saying this will help bring overall change in the society.

He said the teachings of Islam and holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) about cleanliness should also be propagated through mosques. The President said that he will also write a letter to the Council of Islamic Ideology on this as well as the significance of child spacing for overall health of women.

Arif Alvi said we need to invest in adequate infrastructure to increase access to safe and affordable drinking water as well as sanitation facilities.

He said that for the creation of new Pakistan, we will have to make all fields of our socio-economic life functional.

The President said stress should be laid on prevention of diseases as it can leave a positive impact on the national economy.

He said the country does not have sufficient resources to cure all diseases. Therefore for, greater emphasis should be laid on prevention of diseases.

In her remarks on the occasion, Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul said Pakistan is ranked amongst the countries most vulnerable to climate change and steps are being taken to address all the challenges.

Earlier, Procter & Gamble also signed an MOU with the government for becoming partner in its Clean and Green drive.
