Entire Lahore city to be covered with surveillance cameras

LAHORE (APP): Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Dr Haider Ashraf on Thursday said provision of 10,000 surveillance cameras would help improving the foolproof security of the city.

Talking to APP Dr Haider Ashraf said on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, security arrangements of the city were being improved.

He said, "It is our priority to install the cameras in City Division before the start of Muharram-ul-Haram. This year, all Muharram processions will be monitored through these surveillance cameras."

Scanners would be installed at entrances and exits of Lahore and satellite imagery would also be used in case of emergency, he said and added that all the important spots would be monitored at a central control room.

Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) Chief Operating Officer Akbar Nasir told APP that the integrated command and control system had been developed for Punjab Police in Lahore and the system would also be established in other large cities of the province.

The PSCA had identified 2,000 locations to install 10,000 surveillance cameras in the city, he added.

He further said that these cameras would be installed at all the entrances and exits of Lahore, at VVIP routes, public places, crime hot spots and key infrastructure sites, public institutions and markets.

To enhance security, illegal encroachments from main bazaars of the city were also being removed which included Islampura, Hall Road, Anarkali and Karim Park bazaars for minimizing the security threats.

It is pertinent to mention here that the government has recently awarded a contract to install 10,000 surveillance cameras in Lahore, to a Chinese company.
