Pakistan becomes the new head of Group of 77 and China Group in Geneva

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will be the new head of the Group of 77 (G77) and China Group of Developing Countries in Geneva for 2018.

The charge was transferred by Ambassador James Alex Msekela of Tanzania to Ambassador Farukh Amil in the presence of United Nations (UN) Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) secretary general Mukhisa Kituyi and other UN officials.

The delegates, while speaking on the occasion, said that it was more important than ever to stay united now in the face of threats to the multilateral system maintained by the UN.

Ambassador Amil, addressing the attendees, urged for the reinvigoration of the G77 and for the UNCTAD to address present-day challenges.

He also stressed on the need for developing countries to adapt to and focus on emerging technologies, as they have significant implications on the economic and social development.
