ISLAMABAD: A high-level delegation from Turkiye is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad next week to address the escalating tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and to seek a peaceful resolution, Turkish Ambassador Dr Irfan Neziroglu confirmed on Friday.
Speaking to The News at a reception hosted by the Omani Ambassador to mark Oman’s National Day, Dr Neziroglu revealed that the delegation will include the chief of Turkish intelligence and several senior ministers.
The visit was first announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the COP29 summit in Baku earlier this month.
Recent trilateral talks in Istanbul between Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkiye ended without agreement after Kabul showed reluctance to take decisive action against terrorist groups using its territory for attacks inside Pakistan.
Dr Neziroglu, who played a key facilitating role in the Istanbul process, stressed that Ankara remains committed to ensuring no terrorist activity originates from Afghan soil against Pakistan.
The ambassador emphasised that Pakistan and Afghanistan should live as brothers, adding that Turkiye is determined to help both neighbours resolve their differences through dialogue.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar will also accompany the delegation, indicating that bilateral energy cooperation will feature alongside security discussions.
The visit comes amid repeated Pakistani calls for the Afghan interim government to dismantle sanctuaries of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and prevent cross-border incursions.
