Key player ruled out of World Cup due serious injury

England fast bowler Reece Topley’s World Cup journey came to an unfortunateend due to a left index finger fracture sustained during their 229-run lossto South Africa, as confirmed by the country’s cricket board (ECB) onSunday.

Topley’s injury occurred during the first innings, leading to a briefdeparture from the field for treatment. Despite his return to the bowlingcrease, where he finished with figures of 3-88, he did not participate inEngland’s run chase, which ended in a collapse.

Throughout the tournament, the 29-year-old had been England’s standoutbowler, amassing eight wickets in three matches.

After undergoing scans in Mumbai the day after the match at the WankhedeStadium, the extent of Topley’s injury was revealed. The ECB stated that hewould return to the UK within the next 24 hours and collaborate with theEngland and Surrey medical teams to facilitate his rehabilitation.

While the ECB announced their intention to name a replacement in due time,coach Matthew Mott clarified that Jofra Archer, who was in reserve as hemade his comeback from an elbow injury, would not be part of the squad.
