On February 6, 2019, the Supreme Court issued a written verdict in asuo-moto case related to the Tehreek-e-Labbaik’s (TLP) 2017 Faizabadsit-in, ordering action against extremist elements. This verdict played apivotal role in shaping the legal landscape surrounding the Faizabad sit-inand its aftermath.
The Faizabad sit-in itself originated from a weeks-long protest held by theTehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) at Islamabad’s Faizabad Interchange inNovember 2017. The protest was in response to a minor alteration in theoath taken by lawmakers.
The National Assembly had passed an amendment to the oath for electoralcandidates related to the Finality of Prophet-hood (Khatm-e-Nabuwwat),which had sparked widespread protests among religious groups. Ultimately, the government withdrew the controversial amendment, but the legalrepercussions of the protests and the subsequent judicial actions havepersisted.
