Major Diplomatic Moment: Pakistan Chairs Top UN Security Council Session

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will chair a high-level United Nations Security Council (UNSC) debate on Tuesday, highlighting Pakistan’s firm commitment to multilateral diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of global conflicts.

The open debate, titled “Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes,” marks the first of two key events Pakistan has planned during its presidency of the UNSC this month.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres is set to brief the Council, followed by statements from various member states. The session aims to reinforce the relevance of the UN Charter in promoting dialogue and cooperation amid growing international tensions.

“This signature event reflects Pakistan’s strong belief in the power of multilateralism and in the UN Charter’s guiding principle of resolving disputes peacefully,” the Foreign Office stated.

During his visit, Dar will also hold bilateral meetings with key officials, including the Saudi Minister of Economy and Planning, the UK Minister for Africa, the UN’s lead on Commonwealth and Multilateral Affairs, and the Foreign Minister of Thailand. He is also scheduled to give an interview to an international media outlet.

In addition, Dar will attend a reception hosted by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, with select ambassadors and senior UN officials in attendance.
