*BEIJING: China will offer customized data services for disaster preventionthrough its Fengyun meteorological satellites to more countries along theBelt and Road, including Pakistan, China Dailylink reported.*
As per a senior official of the China Meteorological Administration’sNational Satellite Meteorological Center, the services will be provided onthe basis of the results of a survey of 81 countries.
“By the end of April, 22 countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran,Russia, Libya and Sudan, had responded to the survey. All of therespondents said they wanted to install the application software platformsof the Fengyun satellites for weather forecasting, as well as climate andenvironment monitoring,” the Chinese website said.
It further said, the countries have also requested a range of services,especially in monitoring rainfall, droughts, dust storms, heavy fog andlightning, in addition to training courses on Fengyun meteorologicalsatellite data analysis, remote-sensing applications and data collection.
Wei Caiying, deputy general-director of the National SatelliteMeteorological Center, said that real-time disaster monitoring bymeteorological satellites could provide these countries with a scientificbasis for disaster prevention and reduction.
“Weather-related disasters such as typhoons pose a threat to life andproperty. Tracking their path could help local authorities decide how toproceed with evacuations,” she said.
China has launched 17 Fengyun series meteorological satellites, of whichseven are currently in operation.
