Foreign Embassy official in Islamabad suspected of contracting novel coronavirus

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Embassy official in Islamabad suspected of contractingnovel coronavirus.

The Embassy of the United States in Pakistan confirmed on Saturday thatone of its employees in the capital was suspected of contracting the novelcoronavirus.

“We are aware of reports of a COVID-19 case related to an Embassy Islamabademployee. Due to privacy concerns, we are not able to share additionalinformation,” a US Embassy spokesperson said in a statement released to themedia on Saturday afternoon.

The spokesperson added that the embassy was also aware of another reportthat another employee of the embassy, who arrived at Islamabad airport onSaturday morning, was showing signs of the illness. “That employee iscurrently being evaluated,” the spokesperson said.

According to the press release, the US Department of State had reaffirmedthat it had no greater responsibility than the safety and security of UScitizens overseas and locally-employed staff.

“In coordination with Pakistani authorities, the Embassy in Islamabad isimplementing all appropriate measures to help control the spread ofCOVID-19,” the spokesperson noted.
