ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has putforward a new proposal of forming a council for the Diamer Bhasha Dam.
He has said the construction of water reservoirs is a collectiveresponsibility of the nation.
Addressing the participants during first session of the second day ofInternational Symposium on Creating a Water Secure Pakistan here onSaturday, he said all stakeholders should move forward to achieve this goal.
He said there should be a council regarding Diamar Bhasha Dam. He saidWAPDA is an important institution regarding water storage but thisresponsibility should not be laid merely on it. The Chief Justice said thatavailability of water needs to be ensured as Pakistan is facing waterscarcity.
A communiqué issued after the symposium says that an effective mechanismshould be formed for the management of new water reservoirs. It says thatan institutional framework should be formed to address the environmentalissue. Water conservation should be ensured through a regulatory mechanism.
It further said that economic issues for construction of water reservoirsshould be the top priority of the government. The communiqué says thatawareness should be created through education in order to deal with thechallenges of water scarcity.At the end of the first session shields were distributed among the speakers.
