ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday suspended the nomination of leaders of the opposition in both the National Assembly and Senate.
The party’s political committee announced that the appointments of Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Azam Swati as opposition leaders in the NA and Senate have been put on hold.
“No new nominations will be finalized until the appeals of Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz are resolved,” the PTI committee stated.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said the party leadership continues to support the current opposition leaders. “PTI’s founder has proposed new names for the opposition positions,” he added. “We hope the court will rule in our favor.”
The development comes amid internal divisions within PTI over founder Imran Khan’s decision to nominate Mehmood Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. Several party members reportedly objected, suggesting that other capable leaders could assume the role.
The matter was discussed in PTI’s political and parliamentary committees, where some members voiced reservations, while others maintained that the decision made by Imran Khan, currently incarcerated, should be considered final and binding.
Earlier, PTI founder Imran Khan had nominated Mehmood Khan Achakzai for the National Assembly and Azam Khan Swati for the Senate opposition leadership positions.
